Complete Guide to the OSRS Combat Calculator Suite

These OSRS combat tools convert your skill levels, combat bonuses, prayers, attack speed, and target defence into practical numbers. Instead of guessing whether a level, weapon, prayer, or gear upgrade is worthwhile, you can compare its effect before spending time or gold in-game.

The suite contains three connected but different tools. Combat level describes the overall strength of your account, max hit describes the largest damage roll from one successful attack, and DPS estimates sustained damage over time after accuracy and attack speed are included.

1. OSRS Combat Level Calculator

The combat level calculator estimates your displayed OSRS combat level from Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, and Magic. It also identifies whether melee, ranged, magic, or a balanced profile contributes most to your combat level.

The calculation has two main parts:

  • Base combat: Defence, Hitpoints, and half of Prayer contribute to the defensive base.
  • Offensive combat: the strongest of melee, ranged, or magic contribution is added to that base.

In simplified form, the calculator uses a base value of 0.25 × (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer ÷ 2)), then adds the highest offensive contribution. The displayed combat level is the whole-number portion of the result. The “next level” table tests each stat independently, so it shows what would happen if only one skill increased while all other values stayed the same.

2. OSRS Max Hit Calculator

The max hit calculator estimates the largest damage number your setup can produce when an attack successfully lands. It is useful when comparing Strength bonus, Ranged strength, Magic damage, offensive prayers, Void-style boosts, Slayer Helmet-style bonuses, or other damage multipliers.

  1. Select Melee, Ranged, or Magic.
  2. Enter the relevant effective level. If you are already applying a prayer boost, use the boosted level or use the prayer multiplier field consistently—do not apply the same boost twice.
  3. Enter the equipment bonus used by that combat style.
  4. Enter a prayer multiplier and a gear, helmet, or special damage multiplier.
  5. Read the estimated max hit and change one input at a time to compare setups.

Max hit is not the same as average damage. A setup that hits one point higher may still produce less damage per second if it is slower or less accurate.

3. OSRS DPS Calculator

DPS means damage per second. The DPS calculator combines an attacker’s effective level and attack bonus with the target’s Defence level and armour bonus. It then uses the selected attack speed in game ticks to estimate sustained damage.

The simplified flow is:

  1. Calculate an attack roll from the attacker’s effective level and attack bonus.
  2. Calculate a defence roll from the target’s Defence level and armour bonus.
  3. Compare those rolls to estimate hit chance.
  4. Estimate average damage as roughly half of the available max hit.
  5. Divide expected damage by the attack interval. One OSRS game tick is treated as 0.6 seconds.

For example, a high max hit with poor accuracy may have lower DPS than a slightly weaker setup that lands attacks more consistently. Use average DPS and time to kill when comparing weapons or boss setups.

Recommended workflow for accurate comparisons

  1. Start with your current setup and save the three main results: combat level, max hit, and DPS.
  2. Change only one variable, such as Attack level, Strength bonus, prayer, target Defence, or weapon speed.
  3. Compare the new DPS and time to kill against the baseline, not only the max hit.
  4. Repeat the test for realistic target Defence values. A setup can perform very differently against a low-defence monster and a heavily armoured boss.
  5. Use the result as a comparison estimate, then verify special weapon effects and boss mechanics before making an expensive purchase.

How to interpret the results

  • Exact combat level: the unrounded internal value before the displayed whole-number level.
  • Player type: the combat style with the highest estimated offensive contribution. “Balanced” means the leading contributions are close.
  • Max hit: the largest estimated damage roll before accuracy is considered.
  • Hit chance: the estimated chance that an attack successfully lands.
  • Average DPS: expected damage per second over repeated attacks.
  • Time to kill: target hitpoints divided by estimated DPS. Actual kill times vary because damage rolls are random.

Important limitations

This is a fast planning calculator, not a complete tick-perfect OSRS equipment simulator. Actual results can change because of weapon-specific formulas, attack styles, special attacks, spell max-hit rules, damage caps, roll mechanics, salve effects, Slayer bonuses, monster immunities, defensive prayers, NPC-specific bonuses, and the exact order in which boosts are applied. For everyday comparisons, the estimates are useful; for high-value bossing or gear decisions, confirm the final setup with a game-specific calculator.
